Visiting the Doi Tung Thailand Flower Gardens

Situated in the Chiang Rai province in the North of Thailand, the Doi Tung gardens are a magnificent example of how the people and the Royalty of Thailand can turn a once barren mountainside location into a thriving and beautiful landscape. It is believed that the Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai areas are the most concentrated botanical locations in all of Thailand.

Around a decade ago the Doi Tung palace was built at the request and patronage of the Royal Highness the Princess Mother of Thailand. The hillsides had previously been subjected to the slash and burn method of farming and had been home to vast poppy plantations. It resulted in the land being barren and naked. At the request of the Princess Mother, the land was to be re-vegetated and improved, as well as the localvillages. This meant that the locals could turn their main source of income from opium to a more viable and eco friendly trade.

Thanks to the injection of money and innovation by the Royal family, the Doi Tung area has been able to rejuvenate an otherwise barren location into a thriving agricultural area, The locals have since been encouraged and educated to grow flowers and this has helped with their trade and economy of the villages.

The Doi Tung Palace Gardens are testament to the beauty that surrounds ' the Doi Tung area. If it had not been for the interest and concern of the Royal Family, as well as the dedication and knowledge that it required to bring an otherwise barren landscape "back from the edge of destruction, then we would not have the opportunity to explore thismagnificent region of Northern Thailand.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the vast and magnificently fragranced gifts gardens of Doi Tung. Whilst the Palace is not open to tourists, it is certainly well worth the visit to the gardens.
