Why Our Food is Dangerous to Our Health

The National Marine Fisheries Service lists China as supplying 70 percent of America's tilapia. China and Thailand are the largest suppliers of imported shrimp. After traveling over two thousand miles throughout Mainland China and spending five days on the Yangtze River, I have become alarmed at the condition of our imported seafood from Asia.

The waterways of China and Hong Kong are so polluted with industrial chemicals, farm effluents, and human waste that seafood exporters must rely on antibiotic treatment just to keep the fish alive. I witnessed several bloated and decaying bodies, both human and animal, floating down the Yangtze. The Yangtze River empties into the waterways from which much of the exported seafood is fished. Seafood from Asian Fish Farms is no healthier than seafood caught in the wild. Thai and Chinese fishponds are notoriously filthy and pumped full of antibiotics. The FDA discovered the presence of the powerful antibiotic, chloramphenicol, in the imported Asian shrimp. Studies link the antibiotic chloramphenicol, a carcinogen, to anemia and leukemia, especially in children. In a recently published article, CBS News Correspondent Wyatt Andrews quotes food safety expert Caroline Smith DeWaal, "Chloramphenciol is a serious problem in the human food supply," she said. "It's like taking a drug that's not prescribed."

Thailand Travel

Catfish imports from China are another serious concern for the presence of antibiotics. Flouoroquinolone antibiotics, which the FDA has banned for use in food, are showing up in tests conducted on catfish imported from China. "Aside from the threats to health, the imports have also been a threat to the economy of the Mississippi Delta, which provides more than three-fourths of the catfish eaten in the United States," emphasized a report aired on National Public Radio. An influx of cheap imports from Asia is putting the American catfish farmers out of business.

Since only about one percent of our imported seafood is monitored by the FDA, most of the contaminated seafood ends up on our dinner tables.

Our imported fruits and vegetables are not fairing any better. According to an Associated Press analysis of FDA records, border inspectors consistently reject Mexican peppers and chilies. Ten percent of the rejected peppers and chilies were infected with salmonella. Since the FDA inspects less than one percent of all foreign food entering the country, ten percent of one percent is alarming. Mexican imports are disturbing sources of concern, not only from salmonella and E. coli, but also from the heavy pesticides the Mexican Agricultural Industry use in growing produce. It is referred to as "the circle of poison." Chemical companies sell Mexican Agrifarms pesticides that are banned in this county. There are no regulations in the United States for the exportation of banned or unregistered pesticides. Little, if any, oversight exists for the use of these pesticides on the fruits and vegetables grown by the Mexican agricultural farms. With fifty percent of the imported fruits and vegetables in the United States coming from Mexico, we have an intolerable problem of polluted food.

Because the FDA is underfunded and undermanned, it rests on the consumer to force change.

First, don't buy any fresh or frozen seafood from Asia. Support your local fisheries and fishermen. Fish farms in the United States typically use clean water, no antibiotics and no chemicals. If your local grocery store only carries Asian imports, request fish and seafood from the United States, or safer imports from Canada, Australia and New Zealand, for example. World trade is not going away. Just make sure you buy the safer imports.

Second, limit any fruits and vegetables from Mexico to reduce pesticide ingestion. Buy locally, if possible. Shop your local farmers and farm markets. Buy organic fruits and vegetables. Plant your own garden.

You are the author of your own health. Protect your well being with wholesome safe foods. Don't permit the source of a food to become a danger to your health.

Khao Sok Rainforest in Thailand

Khao Sok rain forest is settled in the province of Surat Thani which is just a few hours drive from the favorite traveler destination in Thailand called Phuket. Khao Sok's rainforest is one of the few untouched rainforests in the world, it's even more diverse than the Amazon Rainforest. With lush green vegetation and a collection of spectacular wildlife I am surprised that most people who visit Thailand have never heard of it. It is maybe most illustrious for the Bua Phut (Rafflesia kerrii) flower which grows within the rainforest and blooms once a year. If you are a plant enthusiast Khao Sok is a great place to visit.

Some brilliant hotels there where you can stay in a treehouse and actually get closer to nature.

Phuket

If your a real adventurous type, you can even go camping in the rainforest with an experienced guide who will teach you how to survive in the jungle. Going on your own or with new guides in not advised.
When people talk about Thailand they talk about the wild nightlife, great shopping or the gorgeous beaches, but Khao Sok offers a once in a lifetime experience. Why not get close to nature and visit the rainforest in the national park. I can tell you that having a great touch in the jungle with nature will be best than any nightlife, or beach experience, especially in this rainforest.

This is a place the you should visit if you ever do go to Thailand, believe me it will be one of the most unforgettable experiences you will ever have. I was there in March 2010 and didn't think it would actually whatever much as I am not actually into nature or the outdoors, but this trip has changed my mind forever.

Pattaya Car Hire Guide

Pattaya is one of the cities in Thailand that it is located in the east coast of its gulf. On an estimate, it is about 165 kilometres southeast of the city capital of Bangkok. Pattaya is a self-governing municipal area. There are many tourist attractions in this place, making travellers come back to it for another round of adventure. This city is quite rich in history too, as well as being blessed with beautiful and attractive beach resorts.

The Pattaya beaches alone can draw hundreds of tourists in a day because it can provide anything from water activities to relaxation. There are three smaller islands in Pattaya that are great places for water adventures. These are the Ko Lan, Ko Khrok, and Ko Sak islands. If you would like to have a safari-like experience, simply go to the Elephant Village. There you can enjoy rafting on the lake and trekking on the jungle all you want. As for a milder but equally wild adventure, visit the Sri Racha Tiger Zoo and marvel at the sight of the largest reserve of Bengal tigers in there.

Pattaya

If you're coming to Pattaya for a vacation during the peak summer season, make sure that you reserve a car before hand. There are different car hire services around here and they offer competitive rates. However, it is still necessary that you find the best deal in town to maximize your savings, thereby increasing your fun. Major car hire providers have offices here, and they are Budget, Avis, and Holiday. If you can't book a car from them because all of their vehicles are sold out, local providers like Chalee Car Rent, Unity, and Q Cars can serve you.

Should you want to book a car here in Pattaya, do so by logging over the internet. That's the most convenient thing to do because you don't have to go anywhere else or talk to anybody to reserve the car of your choice. Furthermore, you will be able to compare car rates side-by-side from different companies. This way, you can easily find the right car at the best rate. Furthermore, if you book a car online, you can request for your car to be ready for you at the airport where you'll arrive.

Pattaya Apartments - How to Find the Right Apartment

Get to know Pattaya before you rent an apartment in Pattaya for long term. Rent a Motorbike or scooter and explore Pattaya for a few days if you are new to Pattaya. Visit as many areas as you can. You will see which areas you like and which areas fit your budget if you are on a budget.

Most Apartment complexes won't rent to you for less than 3 - 6 months during high season. You want to make sure you like the area that you will be living in. There are as many apartments in Pattaya as there are grains of sand on the beaches in Pattaya.

Pattaya

You will find very large apartment complexes with hundreds of apartments and you will find smaller buildings with 10, 20 or 30 units. You will see so-called serviced apartments which mean nothing more than "ready to move in".

Bring a notepad along and take notes of the areas you like most. Stop by apartment complexes and find the owner, manager or management office. The manager will most likely speak some English.

Talk to tenants and find out if they like living there and if they know about issues, if any. Once you found and narrowed down on an apartment, visit the apartment and area during different times of the day and night. This is important! This is Thailand. You don't want to find out about bars that stay open all night right on your doorstep after you paid your rent and your deposit.

Standard deposit is usually one month rent, but it may be a little bit more than that if there will be a cleaning fee when you move out. Rents vary from as little as 3,500 Baht to 10's of thousands a month depending on size, location, furniture, whether it has a kitchen or not and much more.

Apartments for less than 3500 Baht a month may not be suitable for most westerners. I have seen very nice and clean apartments for 3,500 Baht and I have seen not so nice ones for 10,000 Baht. For 10,000 Baht a month you should be able to rent a very nice 1 room studio style Apartment with a good kitchen and nice furniture.

Understand how much you will be paying for water and electricity. I have heard of low rents but extremely high charges for water and power. Make sure you write down the water and power reading when you move in. Get a copy of the apartment rules if one is available.

Other Things To Consider :
Check that the power works including light fixtures Check there is water in kitchen, bath, and shower Do you need Air Conditioning? Do the windows have screens? Is there safe parking? Make your list...

Pattaya is not your normal kind of city. It is a party town in many areas and when you choose to rent an apartment you may want to check out the vicinity during daytime and nighttime. Are there any bars close by? Bars can be fun for someone coming to visit Pattaya for a short time. Bars may not be so much fun if you have one in your backyard. Bars in Pattaya oftentimes stay open 24/7.

A Thai Staycation in Edinburgh!

Although every person is laothed to mention the dreaded credit crunch lately it has highlighted a relatively new act...no, not a new entry in the Karma Sutra...no, I'm talking about the staycation! What is a 'staycation'? I hear you ask. Well, it's an American term combining 'stay' and 'vacation' i.e stay at home vacation. It's one of those annoying new words but the principles behind it is good. Rather than spending a fortune on a holiday to say, a nice hot beach Thailand you would bring Thailand to your home (or local area at least) and save some of that precious cash. So, I've put together a rough guide on having a staycation and using my example of Thailand so here goes; Chill 'oot - What best way to get into the relaxed way of life than to treat yourself to a Thai massage. With roots in Yoga, Ayurvedic medicine and Buddhism , a Thai massage involves stretching and massage on a mat and leaves you feeling relaxed both inside and out!

Bring on the heat - While tropical heat may not be the norm for the rest of the world you should be able to recreate the feeling by visiting somewhere tropical instead. Try butterfly world in Edinburgh for exotic insects and clammy heat. best yet, wear shorts and t-shirt whever the weather outside (well you wouldn't wear jeans and Ugg boots in Phuket would you!? Thai food - That main pull for a holiday location for me has got to be the food.

Phuket

I don't want to visit a country only to immediately hunt down bacon and eggs when I could be having tapas, authentic curries or even kangaroo! Why should your staycation be any different? For authentic Thai food, grab the house and head to the Thai Orchid restaurant just off the Royal Mile. With a huge Buddha at the door and Oriental waitresses you will be transported to Thailand from the occasion you walk through the door.

If after your massage you just want to unwind at home then why not learn to cook some Thai food for yourself? The Thai Orchid restaurant, Edinburgh has a set of authentic Thai recipes on its website for you to try at home. Each method has been cooked in the restaurant and includes some house favourites so you can be sure you are getting something 'real'. So that's it, some ideas for a staycation in Edinburgh. While it may not be quite the same as hot-footing it over to Thailand at least you save not only the hard earned pennies but you gain yourself the thirteen hours you would otherwise spend travelling - you can't lose!

Best Hotels in Thailand That Offer Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions!

Personally when I go on a business trip the hotel is one of the most important things I could look for. The services in which they offer along with the convenience of the hotel, prices, and the atmosphere of the hotel mean the most to me. Some people don't mind just staying in a Motel 8 and be done with it. Whereas others like me, take the time to really find out about all the hotel has to offer. If you plan on taking a business trip Internationally, one of the important essentials you will want to make sure your hotel or resort offers is something called MICE. This is an acronym for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions. This is an important facet whether you are traveling alone or are traveling/meeting up with business associates. Royal Cliff Beach Resort & Spa - This is one of the very few resorts that actually offers the best M.I.C.E service which is organized to allow customers such as yourself to have everything you need, allocated in one place. Katathani BHURI Beach Resort - This resort is located on the Kata Noi beach, at the southern end of Phuket, and brimming with unique art and culture of local southern Thailand. Of these three, my favorite one is the Royal Cliff. Not only is it incredibly beautiful and peaceful (for those stressful times) but it also boasts one of the most amazing MICE services and opportunities. I had traveled to Thailand before for holiday reasons so I already knew how exhilarating it was, but to be able to have the choice to see the M.I.C.E up close and personal and seeing how it really works and how well it can make your business trip a little easier, instead of just reading about it, was pretty neat. Check it out and see for yourself!

Growing Flowers in Tropical Climates

Tropical flowers are hard to deny as some of the most breath taking and beautiful species that mother nature has bestowed upon us. Growing flowers in a tropical climate can sometimes be a little tricky, but if you are able to remember some of the basic rules, you should be able to compliment what mother nature has given us.

Many of the tropical flowers have some of the most wonderful fragrances. Many of us would like to grow these flowers so that we may be surrounded with the scent all day long. If you are starting your own tropical garden, or you would like to know how to better care for your tropical flowering species then it pays to consider some aspects.

Pattaya

Ensure that the temperature that your plant will live in, remains reasonably constant. It should range between50 to 65 degrees during the darker hours and 70 to 80 during daylight time. Make sure that your plant has bright filtered light. Many of the plants that live in the tropics receive a high degree of light, although they do not grow in direct sunlight. It is recommended that the plants are not placed in Northern facing windows, but Eastern sides where there are hours of daylight and also western and southern sides where there is filtered light is ideal.

Make sure that your tropical flowers receive plenty of high quality fertilizer, and are watered often so that the soil remains moist. Do not soak the soil and leave the plant in soggy dirt. They enjoy a constantly moist environment. During the hotter months, still more fans to allow the air to circulate around your plants is a greatidea.

Try to mimic nature as much as possible in order for your tropical flowers to thrive. If you live within a tropical climate then allowing for filtered sunlight, to constantly moist soil that has been fertilized with a good quality plant specific fertilizer, and with adequate air flow and consistent weather, your tropical flowers should bloom profusely.

A Guide to Surin Beach, Phuket, Thailand

Surin beach in Phuket is one of the great beaches in Phuket and offers a estimate of luxury hotels alongside the more laid back beach restaurants and bars. The beach itself is about 1km long with a small beach road going along its length. This small road is lined with small restaurants and a few bars and a club.

Twin Palms resort is the main hotel on the beach and the associated Surin beach Catch Beach Club is their beach bar and restaurant. They have a good size area on the north end of the beach with luxury sunbeds, important into the bar and decked area that is exquisite for a spot of food and drink during the day and is a bright open air bar in the evening. This place is the place to be for new years eve and Catch offers drink and food packages to get you in the mood. They furnish a dance floor and decent Dj's to the early hours of the morning. The luxury yachts parked off the beach spill out into the performance too.

Phuket

The other bright part of the beach is Stereolabs which is an open air bar and club supplementary down the beach offering bar food, music and plentifulness of drinks. The place gets going later on in the evening and whilst it gets pretty load and boozy it is a much more tasteful venue than those found in the busy beach town of Patong.

Between these two main venues are a estimate of restaurants of varying degree of quality, but on the whole thy are all nice places to grab some food with Surin beach as the backdrop.

The water is ordinarily pretty calm with a few small waves. The wet season sees a few bigger waves that can be used for body boarding or surfing. There are some submerged rocks to the south of the Catch beach club which are only graphic at low tide so make sure you know whats in the water before you go diving in head first.

There is a small bar right at the end of the beach on the south side on the rocks which offers spectacular, views along Surin beach. It is not the nicest finding of bars but the views, relaxed climate and cheap drink make this place well worth a visit for a incorporate of sun-downers.

Surin beach is about 40 minutes to the airport, 15 to Kamala beach and 35 into Patong, so all in all it is pretty well placed to entrance all that you need when staying on Phuket.

Park Lane: One Bedroom Apartment Rentals in Jomtien Pattaya Thailand

Park Lane. One bedroom apartment rentals in Jomtien.

One bedroom apartment rentals in Jomtien. Which one to choose and which is affordable?

Pattaya

Today there is a huge choice in the one bedroom rental market in Jomtien and Pattaya where prices can be from 10 to 35, 000bt or more a month. Yes there are cheaper one bedroom rentals available but some of these can be in serious need of a little care and attention, also the low price is only for long term rentals not one or two month stays. Now there are new boutique one bedroom apartments being built in Jomtien and Pattaya offering one bedroom apartment rentals at prices as low as 14.000 Baht a month.

These one bedroom apartment rentals offer high class rental accommodations at affordable prices for the average holidaymaker.

Park Lane is one of these new Boutique complexes. Located in Jomtien, Park Lane offers the holiday maker value for money while providing quality accommodation with many added high class facilities included as standard.

Each one bedroom apartment is decorated by the project and has everything you'd expect from a modern holiday rental and with some extra finishing touches.

The basics are as follows:

Interior
Air conditioning Fitted kitchen Sofa Dining table and chairs Bedroom Wardrobe Modern well appointed bathroom facilities.

The project consists of four, eight story buildings surrounding the centre piece of the project which is a 1600 sq.m. Lagoon swimming pool. The pool snakes its way around the entire building complex and is a greatplace to relax in and slowly work your way around the complex in the cool refreshing water.

Another finishing touch is the modern fully equipped gym which is located in the center of the project. Here you can work out while watching people enjoy the long winding pool or just relaxing on one of the many sun loungers that are available.

There's also a restaurant and bar to enjoy. The developers of Park Lane have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable and relaxing. Below are some of the other facilities that are at the Park Lane complex.
laundry shuttle bus (This is interesting and I'll explain why a little later) 24 hour reception car parking 24 hour on site security guards elevator each building telephone socket tv outlet internet outlet

ParkLane is a low rise development offering first class rental accommodations with all the facilities you could ask for in your holiday home. So why the shuttle bus?

Above is mentioned all the positive aspects of the Park lane complex.

Modern

One bedroom

Affordable: With prices around 14.000 Baht for the month

And so on. But why so cheap when other one bedroom holiday rentals in Jomtien are costing at least 20.000 Baht a month.

Location and room size. That's why.

Room size 36sqm

The developers have cleverly managed to design a one bedroom apartment with kitchen, lounge, bathroom and separate bedroom all in to 36sqm area. To be fair they've done a good job. The bedroom may not be the biggest but there is a double bed and it is separate from thelounge and kitchen area.

Location and the shuttle bus

The Park Lane complex is at least 800 yards from Jomtien beach Soi Watboon which is past Soi 11 Jomtien beach road. There is no baht bus as such that runs down to the beach in Jomtien so here is where the shuttle bus comes in. Park Lane operates a shuttle bus service to take the residents into Jomtien. Great! But if you just miss the bus it's a half hour to an hour before it returns, so you have to decide if you want to walk or wait. And then how do you get back once in Jomtien? Yes catch the shuttle. From people who I have spoken to they all say Park Lane is a nice place to stay, but their only criticism is the shuttle bus and the inconvenience it has sometimes caused.

If the distance to the beach 800 plus metersand its remoteness from central Jomtien is not a problem and your happy to walk down to the beach or main baht bus route, then Park Lane is well worth the money. If however you want to be close to central Jomtien and be on the main bus route baht then think about it.

Park Lane is very good value for money and offers many first class facilities. It's only draw back is its location from Jomtien and the beach. But in the scheme of things 800 meters isn't that far. Is it?

Jomtien is full of one bedroom apartments for rent. Before you book online, be sure you know where it is your booking. Close to the beach can mean many different things.
