Why Our Food is Dangerous to Our Health

The National Marine Fisheries Service lists China as supplying 70 percent of America's tilapia. China and Thailand are the largest suppliers of imported shrimp. After traveling over two thousand miles throughout Mainland China and spending five days on the Yangtze River, I have become alarmed at the condition of our imported seafood from Asia.

The waterways of China and Hong Kong are so polluted with industrial chemicals, farm effluents, and human waste that seafood exporters must rely on antibiotic treatment just to keep the fish alive. I witnessed several bloated and decaying bodies, both human and animal, floating down the Yangtze. The Yangtze River empties into the waterways from which much of the exported seafood is fished. Seafood from Asian Fish Farms is no healthier than seafood caught in the wild. Thai and Chinese fishponds are notoriously filthy and pumped full of antibiotics. The FDA discovered the presence of the powerful antibiotic, chloramphenicol, in the imported Asian shrimp. Studies link the antibiotic chloramphenicol, a carcinogen, to anemia and leukemia, especially in children. In a recently published article, CBS News Correspondent Wyatt Andrews quotes food safety expert Caroline Smith DeWaal, "Chloramphenciol is a serious problem in the human food supply," she said. "It's like taking a drug that's not prescribed."

Thailand Travel

Catfish imports from China are another serious concern for the presence of antibiotics. Flouoroquinolone antibiotics, which the FDA has banned for use in food, are showing up in tests conducted on catfish imported from China. "Aside from the threats to health, the imports have also been a threat to the economy of the Mississippi Delta, which provides more than three-fourths of the catfish eaten in the United States," emphasized a report aired on National Public Radio. An influx of cheap imports from Asia is putting the American catfish farmers out of business.

Since only about one percent of our imported seafood is monitored by the FDA, most of the contaminated seafood ends up on our dinner tables.

Our imported fruits and vegetables are not fairing any better. According to an Associated Press analysis of FDA records, border inspectors consistently reject Mexican peppers and chilies. Ten percent of the rejected peppers and chilies were infected with salmonella. Since the FDA inspects less than one percent of all foreign food entering the country, ten percent of one percent is alarming. Mexican imports are disturbing sources of concern, not only from salmonella and E. coli, but also from the heavy pesticides the Mexican Agricultural Industry use in growing produce. It is referred to as "the circle of poison." Chemical companies sell Mexican Agrifarms pesticides that are banned in this county. There are no regulations in the United States for the exportation of banned or unregistered pesticides. Little, if any, oversight exists for the use of these pesticides on the fruits and vegetables grown by the Mexican agricultural farms. With fifty percent of the imported fruits and vegetables in the United States coming from Mexico, we have an intolerable problem of polluted food.

Because the FDA is underfunded and undermanned, it rests on the consumer to force change.

First, don't buy any fresh or frozen seafood from Asia. Support your local fisheries and fishermen. Fish farms in the United States typically use clean water, no antibiotics and no chemicals. If your local grocery store only carries Asian imports, request fish and seafood from the United States, or safer imports from Canada, Australia and New Zealand, for example. World trade is not going away. Just make sure you buy the safer imports.

Second, limit any fruits and vegetables from Mexico to reduce pesticide ingestion. Buy locally, if possible. Shop your local farmers and farm markets. Buy organic fruits and vegetables. Plant your own garden.

You are the author of your own health. Protect your well being with wholesome safe foods. Don't permit the source of a food to become a danger to your health.

Khao Sok Rainforest in Thailand

Khao Sok rain forest is settled in the province of Surat Thani which is just a few hours drive from the favorite traveler destination in Thailand called Phuket. Khao Sok's rainforest is one of the few untouched rainforests in the world, it's even more diverse than the Amazon Rainforest. With lush green vegetation and a collection of spectacular wildlife I am surprised that most people who visit Thailand have never heard of it. It is maybe most illustrious for the Bua Phut (Rafflesia kerrii) flower which grows within the rainforest and blooms once a year. If you are a plant enthusiast Khao Sok is a great place to visit.

Some brilliant hotels there where you can stay in a treehouse and actually get closer to nature.

Phuket

If your a real adventurous type, you can even go camping in the rainforest with an experienced guide who will teach you how to survive in the jungle. Going on your own or with new guides in not advised.
When people talk about Thailand they talk about the wild nightlife, great shopping or the gorgeous beaches, but Khao Sok offers a once in a lifetime experience. Why not get close to nature and visit the rainforest in the national park. I can tell you that having a great touch in the jungle with nature will be best than any nightlife, or beach experience, especially in this rainforest.

This is a place the you should visit if you ever do go to Thailand, believe me it will be one of the most unforgettable experiences you will ever have. I was there in March 2010 and didn't think it would actually whatever much as I am not actually into nature or the outdoors, but this trip has changed my mind forever.

Pattaya Car Hire Guide

Pattaya is one of the cities in Thailand that it is located in the east coast of its gulf. On an estimate, it is about 165 kilometres southeast of the city capital of Bangkok. Pattaya is a self-governing municipal area. There are many tourist attractions in this place, making travellers come back to it for another round of adventure. This city is quite rich in history too, as well as being blessed with beautiful and attractive beach resorts.

The Pattaya beaches alone can draw hundreds of tourists in a day because it can provide anything from water activities to relaxation. There are three smaller islands in Pattaya that are great places for water adventures. These are the Ko Lan, Ko Khrok, and Ko Sak islands. If you would like to have a safari-like experience, simply go to the Elephant Village. There you can enjoy rafting on the lake and trekking on the jungle all you want. As for a milder but equally wild adventure, visit the Sri Racha Tiger Zoo and marvel at the sight of the largest reserve of Bengal tigers in there.

Pattaya

If you're coming to Pattaya for a vacation during the peak summer season, make sure that you reserve a car before hand. There are different car hire services around here and they offer competitive rates. However, it is still necessary that you find the best deal in town to maximize your savings, thereby increasing your fun. Major car hire providers have offices here, and they are Budget, Avis, and Holiday. If you can't book a car from them because all of their vehicles are sold out, local providers like Chalee Car Rent, Unity, and Q Cars can serve you.

Should you want to book a car here in Pattaya, do so by logging over the internet. That's the most convenient thing to do because you don't have to go anywhere else or talk to anybody to reserve the car of your choice. Furthermore, you will be able to compare car rates side-by-side from different companies. This way, you can easily find the right car at the best rate. Furthermore, if you book a car online, you can request for your car to be ready for you at the airport where you'll arrive.

Pattaya Apartments - How to Find the Right Apartment

Get to know Pattaya before you rent an apartment in Pattaya for long term. Rent a Motorbike or scooter and explore Pattaya for a few days if you are new to Pattaya. Visit as many areas as you can. You will see which areas you like and which areas fit your budget if you are on a budget.

Most Apartment complexes won't rent to you for less than 3 - 6 months during high season. You want to make sure you like the area that you will be living in. There are as many apartments in Pattaya as there are grains of sand on the beaches in Pattaya.

Pattaya

You will find very large apartment complexes with hundreds of apartments and you will find smaller buildings with 10, 20 or 30 units. You will see so-called serviced apartments which mean nothing more than "ready to move in".

Bring a notepad along and take notes of the areas you like most. Stop by apartment complexes and find the owner, manager or management office. The manager will most likely speak some English.

Talk to tenants and find out if they like living there and if they know about issues, if any. Once you found and narrowed down on an apartment, visit the apartment and area during different times of the day and night. This is important! This is Thailand. You don't want to find out about bars that stay open all night right on your doorstep after you paid your rent and your deposit.

Standard deposit is usually one month rent, but it may be a little bit more than that if there will be a cleaning fee when you move out. Rents vary from as little as 3,500 Baht to 10's of thousands a month depending on size, location, furniture, whether it has a kitchen or not and much more.

Apartments for less than 3500 Baht a month may not be suitable for most westerners. I have seen very nice and clean apartments for 3,500 Baht and I have seen not so nice ones for 10,000 Baht. For 10,000 Baht a month you should be able to rent a very nice 1 room studio style Apartment with a good kitchen and nice furniture.

Understand how much you will be paying for water and electricity. I have heard of low rents but extremely high charges for water and power. Make sure you write down the water and power reading when you move in. Get a copy of the apartment rules if one is available.

Other Things To Consider :
Check that the power works including light fixtures Check there is water in kitchen, bath, and shower Do you need Air Conditioning? Do the windows have screens? Is there safe parking? Make your list...

Pattaya is not your normal kind of city. It is a party town in many areas and when you choose to rent an apartment you may want to check out the vicinity during daytime and nighttime. Are there any bars close by? Bars can be fun for someone coming to visit Pattaya for a short time. Bars may not be so much fun if you have one in your backyard. Bars in Pattaya oftentimes stay open 24/7.

A Thai Staycation in Edinburgh!

Although every person is laothed to mention the dreaded credit crunch lately it has highlighted a relatively new act...no, not a new entry in the Karma Sutra...no, I'm talking about the staycation! What is a 'staycation'? I hear you ask. Well, it's an American term combining 'stay' and 'vacation' i.e stay at home vacation. It's one of those annoying new words but the principles behind it is good. Rather than spending a fortune on a holiday to say, a nice hot beach Thailand you would bring Thailand to your home (or local area at least) and save some of that precious cash. So, I've put together a rough guide on having a staycation and using my example of Thailand so here goes; Chill 'oot - What best way to get into the relaxed way of life than to treat yourself to a Thai massage. With roots in Yoga, Ayurvedic medicine and Buddhism , a Thai massage involves stretching and massage on a mat and leaves you feeling relaxed both inside and out!

Bring on the heat - While tropical heat may not be the norm for the rest of the world you should be able to recreate the feeling by visiting somewhere tropical instead. Try butterfly world in Edinburgh for exotic insects and clammy heat. best yet, wear shorts and t-shirt whever the weather outside (well you wouldn't wear jeans and Ugg boots in Phuket would you!? Thai food - That main pull for a holiday location for me has got to be the food.

Phuket

I don't want to visit a country only to immediately hunt down bacon and eggs when I could be having tapas, authentic curries or even kangaroo! Why should your staycation be any different? For authentic Thai food, grab the house and head to the Thai Orchid restaurant just off the Royal Mile. With a huge Buddha at the door and Oriental waitresses you will be transported to Thailand from the occasion you walk through the door.

If after your massage you just want to unwind at home then why not learn to cook some Thai food for yourself? The Thai Orchid restaurant, Edinburgh has a set of authentic Thai recipes on its website for you to try at home. Each method has been cooked in the restaurant and includes some house favourites so you can be sure you are getting something 'real'. So that's it, some ideas for a staycation in Edinburgh. While it may not be quite the same as hot-footing it over to Thailand at least you save not only the hard earned pennies but you gain yourself the thirteen hours you would otherwise spend travelling - you can't lose!

Best Hotels in Thailand That Offer Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions!

Personally when I go on a business trip the hotel is one of the most important things I could look for. The services in which they offer along with the convenience of the hotel, prices, and the atmosphere of the hotel mean the most to me. Some people don't mind just staying in a Motel 8 and be done with it. Whereas others like me, take the time to really find out about all the hotel has to offer. If you plan on taking a business trip Internationally, one of the important essentials you will want to make sure your hotel or resort offers is something called MICE. This is an acronym for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions. This is an important facet whether you are traveling alone or are traveling/meeting up with business associates. Royal Cliff Beach Resort & Spa - This is one of the very few resorts that actually offers the best M.I.C.E service which is organized to allow customers such as yourself to have everything you need, allocated in one place. Katathani BHURI Beach Resort - This resort is located on the Kata Noi beach, at the southern end of Phuket, and brimming with unique art and culture of local southern Thailand. Of these three, my favorite one is the Royal Cliff. Not only is it incredibly beautiful and peaceful (for those stressful times) but it also boasts one of the most amazing MICE services and opportunities. I had traveled to Thailand before for holiday reasons so I already knew how exhilarating it was, but to be able to have the choice to see the M.I.C.E up close and personal and seeing how it really works and how well it can make your business trip a little easier, instead of just reading about it, was pretty neat. Check it out and see for yourself!

Growing Flowers in Tropical Climates

Tropical flowers are hard to deny as some of the most breath taking and beautiful species that mother nature has bestowed upon us. Growing flowers in a tropical climate can sometimes be a little tricky, but if you are able to remember some of the basic rules, you should be able to compliment what mother nature has given us.

Many of the tropical flowers have some of the most wonderful fragrances. Many of us would like to grow these flowers so that we may be surrounded with the scent all day long. If you are starting your own tropical garden, or you would like to know how to better care for your tropical flowering species then it pays to consider some aspects.

Pattaya

Ensure that the temperature that your plant will live in, remains reasonably constant. It should range between50 to 65 degrees during the darker hours and 70 to 80 during daylight time. Make sure that your plant has bright filtered light. Many of the plants that live in the tropics receive a high degree of light, although they do not grow in direct sunlight. It is recommended that the plants are not placed in Northern facing windows, but Eastern sides where there are hours of daylight and also western and southern sides where there is filtered light is ideal.

Make sure that your tropical flowers receive plenty of high quality fertilizer, and are watered often so that the soil remains moist. Do not soak the soil and leave the plant in soggy dirt. They enjoy a constantly moist environment. During the hotter months, still more fans to allow the air to circulate around your plants is a greatidea.

Try to mimic nature as much as possible in order for your tropical flowers to thrive. If you live within a tropical climate then allowing for filtered sunlight, to constantly moist soil that has been fertilized with a good quality plant specific fertilizer, and with adequate air flow and consistent weather, your tropical flowers should bloom profusely.

A Guide to Surin Beach, Phuket, Thailand

Surin beach in Phuket is one of the great beaches in Phuket and offers a estimate of luxury hotels alongside the more laid back beach restaurants and bars. The beach itself is about 1km long with a small beach road going along its length. This small road is lined with small restaurants and a few bars and a club.

Twin Palms resort is the main hotel on the beach and the associated Surin beach Catch Beach Club is their beach bar and restaurant. They have a good size area on the north end of the beach with luxury sunbeds, important into the bar and decked area that is exquisite for a spot of food and drink during the day and is a bright open air bar in the evening. This place is the place to be for new years eve and Catch offers drink and food packages to get you in the mood. They furnish a dance floor and decent Dj's to the early hours of the morning. The luxury yachts parked off the beach spill out into the performance too.

Phuket

The other bright part of the beach is Stereolabs which is an open air bar and club supplementary down the beach offering bar food, music and plentifulness of drinks. The place gets going later on in the evening and whilst it gets pretty load and boozy it is a much more tasteful venue than those found in the busy beach town of Patong.

Between these two main venues are a estimate of restaurants of varying degree of quality, but on the whole thy are all nice places to grab some food with Surin beach as the backdrop.

The water is ordinarily pretty calm with a few small waves. The wet season sees a few bigger waves that can be used for body boarding or surfing. There are some submerged rocks to the south of the Catch beach club which are only graphic at low tide so make sure you know whats in the water before you go diving in head first.

There is a small bar right at the end of the beach on the south side on the rocks which offers spectacular, views along Surin beach. It is not the nicest finding of bars but the views, relaxed climate and cheap drink make this place well worth a visit for a incorporate of sun-downers.

Surin beach is about 40 minutes to the airport, 15 to Kamala beach and 35 into Patong, so all in all it is pretty well placed to entrance all that you need when staying on Phuket.

Park Lane: One Bedroom Apartment Rentals in Jomtien Pattaya Thailand

Park Lane. One bedroom apartment rentals in Jomtien.

One bedroom apartment rentals in Jomtien. Which one to choose and which is affordable?

Pattaya

Today there is a huge choice in the one bedroom rental market in Jomtien and Pattaya where prices can be from 10 to 35, 000bt or more a month. Yes there are cheaper one bedroom rentals available but some of these can be in serious need of a little care and attention, also the low price is only for long term rentals not one or two month stays. Now there are new boutique one bedroom apartments being built in Jomtien and Pattaya offering one bedroom apartment rentals at prices as low as 14.000 Baht a month.

These one bedroom apartment rentals offer high class rental accommodations at affordable prices for the average holidaymaker.

Park Lane is one of these new Boutique complexes. Located in Jomtien, Park Lane offers the holiday maker value for money while providing quality accommodation with many added high class facilities included as standard.

Each one bedroom apartment is decorated by the project and has everything you'd expect from a modern holiday rental and with some extra finishing touches.

The basics are as follows:

Interior
Air conditioning Fitted kitchen Sofa Dining table and chairs Bedroom Wardrobe Modern well appointed bathroom facilities.

The project consists of four, eight story buildings surrounding the centre piece of the project which is a 1600 sq.m. Lagoon swimming pool. The pool snakes its way around the entire building complex and is a greatplace to relax in and slowly work your way around the complex in the cool refreshing water.

Another finishing touch is the modern fully equipped gym which is located in the center of the project. Here you can work out while watching people enjoy the long winding pool or just relaxing on one of the many sun loungers that are available.

There's also a restaurant and bar to enjoy. The developers of Park Lane have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable and relaxing. Below are some of the other facilities that are at the Park Lane complex.
laundry shuttle bus (This is interesting and I'll explain why a little later) 24 hour reception car parking 24 hour on site security guards elevator each building telephone socket tv outlet internet outlet

ParkLane is a low rise development offering first class rental accommodations with all the facilities you could ask for in your holiday home. So why the shuttle bus?

Above is mentioned all the positive aspects of the Park lane complex.

Modern

One bedroom

Affordable: With prices around 14.000 Baht for the month

And so on. But why so cheap when other one bedroom holiday rentals in Jomtien are costing at least 20.000 Baht a month.

Location and room size. That's why.

Room size 36sqm

The developers have cleverly managed to design a one bedroom apartment with kitchen, lounge, bathroom and separate bedroom all in to 36sqm area. To be fair they've done a good job. The bedroom may not be the biggest but there is a double bed and it is separate from thelounge and kitchen area.

Location and the shuttle bus

The Park Lane complex is at least 800 yards from Jomtien beach Soi Watboon which is past Soi 11 Jomtien beach road. There is no baht bus as such that runs down to the beach in Jomtien so here is where the shuttle bus comes in. Park Lane operates a shuttle bus service to take the residents into Jomtien. Great! But if you just miss the bus it's a half hour to an hour before it returns, so you have to decide if you want to walk or wait. And then how do you get back once in Jomtien? Yes catch the shuttle. From people who I have spoken to they all say Park Lane is a nice place to stay, but their only criticism is the shuttle bus and the inconvenience it has sometimes caused.

If the distance to the beach 800 plus metersand its remoteness from central Jomtien is not a problem and your happy to walk down to the beach or main baht bus route, then Park Lane is well worth the money. If however you want to be close to central Jomtien and be on the main bus route baht then think about it.

Park Lane is very good value for money and offers many first class facilities. It's only draw back is its location from Jomtien and the beach. But in the scheme of things 800 meters isn't that far. Is it?

Jomtien is full of one bedroom apartments for rent. Before you book online, be sure you know where it is your booking. Close to the beach can mean many different things.

The excellent Old Phuket Town offers many scenes of interest to the enthusiastic traveller. Historically and culturally rich, this sector of Phuket contains numerous quaint temples and shrines, well preserved elaborate shophouses, charming cafes, public as well as hidden museums, and small printing shops.

Of special importance is the unique Sino-Portuguese architecture which seemingly transports visitors to an earlier age with the overwhelming buildings remaining impressive to this day. This architecture is determined to be a result of European influences in the island.

Phuket

Old Phuket Town was created straight through the riches obtained straight through last century's tin boom, at which time the metal was a very necessary substance. In this part of the city the traveller will encounter imposing Sino-colonial stately homes, which were once the residences of Phuket's tin merchants. Numerous cafes and restaurants in the area mean that the visitor will never be in need of refreshment in this quarter.

Thalang Road is the hub of the Old Town, where Phuket's previous centre of commerce was based. Today the quaint shophouses are used as market vending such fascinating goods as handicrafts and herbal Chinese medicines. Interestingly these shophouses and similar residences are far longer than they are wide, with lattice worked frontal areas. Numerous Old Town streets highlight archways and arcades which join shops together and offer shelter for pedestrians.

On Dibuk Road the visitor will find more relics of Phuket's past; 'Dibuk' means tin in Thai. Sublime features are a French restaurant as well as arts and textile shops. Thai Dating - How to Avoid Bad Girls and Meet Good Ones

This report is going to be very direct and honest because there has been a lot written about Thailand girls over the years so Thai dating is now a tricky subject. Of policy we all hear about the stories of the noted Thai bar girls and we also hear about seemingly general Thai girls who end up leaving their foreign husbands when he runs out of money.

Well as a Thai woman myself I can tell you many of the stories you hear are true, but I will also say that many of these are written by western men ( known as Farang to Thai people) and so we must understand they are going to be a minuscule biased. That's not to say they are production it all up because I know some are not but I have to say that I all the time think there are two sides to all things and I am not sure all these western men are just helpless victims of heartless and ruthless Thai bar girls.

Phuket

The conjecture I say this is because when I hear many western men talk about their bad experiences they all seem so attractive and smart, yet we know many consider Thai girls as not being that smart because many are not educated. So I can't help wondering what happened to their smart brain when this uneducated Thai bar girl tricked them for money? Sorry if this sounds hard but I share this because I want you to avoid it.

So let's move on to how to avoid dating Thai girls that are bad for you!

Firstly you need to have the insight that in life we reap what we sow or put an additional one way we attract that what we hold inside. What this means here is that very often western men have something in their mind when they go to Thailand. If they have a desire to have a Thai girlfriend they also very often have the wrong thoughts about Thai girls in their mind. They then succeed this up by visiting the wrong places in Thailand in hunt of a Thai Girlfriend and so they end up with the wrong type of girl. Now that's ok if you are clear about what type of girl she is and why you have got complicated with her and if you are happy with that and what the consequences can be (ie: she might steal your money). I have talked to many men about this and it is very attractive when they meet these girls that they don't seem to understand what they actually are...because to them western men are just business. Just because it is not set up like it is in the West doesn't turn the fact of what they do. I think you know what I am saying with this by now I hope.

So how to find good Thailand Girls for Thai dating?

Right so you want to start dating Thai girls that are sincere and genuine right? Well what I can tell you is this.

Many of them will be found in the same types of places that good western girls are found. They are in general life working in shops, hotels, offices and hospitals. You can see them in the shopping Malls and in the movie theatres. Where they are not is in the bars and clubs of Pattaya, parts of Bangkok and Phuket. Understand that good Thai girls don't socialize like citizen in the West and they are very often working or with their families. So what about Online Thai Dating...can you find your Thai Love that way? Well I think this is actually a good place to start to be honest because you can actually get to know some Thai women and learn about them and their culture first because it is different from western culture. Social networks are fine but they are more risky because you also get less sincere girls on a lot of these so the paid dating agencies are the best in my concept and I have seen and heard of many relationships and even marriages happen between Thai women and Western men from this.

That is some of my ideas and tips on how to avoid bad Thai girls and find Good Thailand girls. If you want to know more about Thai dating, and relationships with Thai women and how to find them please visit my website and sign up for my free tips and ebook at http://www.thaigirlfriendadvisor.com/find-your-thai-love/.

This country is composed of 75 provinces with someone else two special governed areas such as Pattaya City and Bangkok, the country's capital. The Chao Praya River in Bangkok - So Much to See and Do

When traveling to Bangkok, a great way to take in a lot of sights at once is to hop on the Chao Praya River Express. Instead of catching a cab or hiring a guide, take this cheap and easy tourist boat along the Chao Praya River and hop off at any of the major tourist attractions. For 20baht (less than Usd) you can take a relaxing ride away from all of the noise and pollution of the city. For 100 baht ( Usd), you can buy an all day pass giving you an unlimited amount of rides to hop on and off whenever you please.

Make your way to the river and you can catch this boat at any pier. Social Buses, the sky train, taxis and tuk tuks, they will know where to take you. The boats run in whether direction from the Taksin Bridge to The Banglampu District near Khao San Road. Both the tourist boat and the Social boat leave from these piers. If you truly want to save money and voyage like a local, catch the Social boat for only 8 baht. It is more crowded and there are no tour guides, but it will get you to where you want to go just fine.

Bangkok Tour

But if you are a first time visitor to Bangkok I advise the tourist boat. It is quieter, the seats are comfortable and it doesn't spew exhaust that chokes you as ride along. A tour guide will talk to you about the sights on the shores and you can sit and listen all the way to the end of the line. However, you will want to jump off a lot, because this boat stops at every major tourist attraction along the river. These sights are some of the most spectacular in the city and a must for every tourist.

You can hop off at China Town, the National Museum, Temple of the Dawn, Wat Arun and Wat Pho. The nautical Museum, the Gemstone Market, the Oriental Hotel and of procedure the Grand Palace, Bangkok's most favorite destination.

It is an effective and well-run system. At each pier the deck hand ties the boat up as he blows his whistle relentlessly to let the captain know what is going on. Once the boat is safely secure, you can step off onto the pier to contemplate the area in front of you. Once you are done, you can catch the next boat that comes by. Between the tourist boat and the local boat, you can get to your next destination in minutes. They run just like a bus or subway system. If you don't have the 1-day pass, you will have to pay again, but the price is so little, you won't feel bad, especially if you ride the local boat.

You could spend days in Bangkok and never leave the river. Every stop is whether right on the rivers banks or within walking distance from the Pier. The temples are splendid and Wat Pho is a must see destination. The oldest temple in Bangkok, it is home to the 46 meter long reclining Buddha. Lying down, it stands 15 meters high.

Wat Arun aka The Temple of the Dawn is majestic. It stands on the opposite side of the river from the other attractions and its tower stands proudly seeing over the water. Chinatown is vibrant and interesting and you can make your way to the Temple of the Golden Buddha. A solid gold Buddha sit in its walls and it has an interesting story. For 20 years it was sitting in storage underground within a plaster Buddha. It was discovered when a crane accidentally dropped it to spin this great treasure that is now on display for your viewing.

Last but not least is the Grand Palace. Built in 1782 it houses the Royal Temple containing the Emerald Buddha. Walk around its gorgeous grounds and take in its grandeur. This is by far the most visited temple in all of Bangkok.

When visiting the Wat's, make sure to dress properly. Have respect for the Buddhist culture and result the guidelines. In places like the grand Palace, Wat Arun and Wat Pho wear a long sleeved shirt and a sarong or long skirt. Men should wear long pants and have their shoulders covered. These temples are open to the Social and people pray and worship within their walls. Have respect for their beliefs and do not disrupt them.

Once you are done your day of sight seeing, you can hop back on the tourist or local boat and make your way to the Taksin Bridge where you can catch the sky train back to anywhere that you are staying in the city. Be it Siam Square, or Sukhumvit. The sky train is quick, efficient, cheap and fast.

Or great yet, hire a tuk tuk to taste a true Thailand tradition. Zip through the streets in a three-wheeler motorcar and feel the power of the city. Barter hard however and never fall for the scam of a free or cheap 10 baht ride because they will take you to every gem store until you buy something. Once they have their commission, you may not have a lift back to your hotel.

With a good map, a guide book and a firm rule to stick to your plans, getting around Bangkok can be a lot of fun and a few days by the river can be a rejuvenating experience.

The Gulf of Siam, Thailand - Your Island-Hopping, Adventure-Honeymoon Destination

Ever seen the film, The Beach? Idyllic beaches, pristine waters and unending adventure: the chain of islands in the Gulf of Siam is the excellent location for a sizzling-hot honeymoon, romantic but also adrenaline pumping. Come honeymoon planning, evaluate the many pros (all items listed above) and cons (expensive flight, long flight) and you'll see that the pros assuredly outweigh the cons. Lazing about on hammocks overlooking the water, island hopping and jungle trekking a la Leonardo DiCaprio in The Beach is the excellent fit for adventure-honeymoon seekers.

The islands of Koh Chang on the east of the gulf, and Koh Phangan, Koh Tao and Koh Samui on the west, are all within short and easy bus or train routes from Bangkok. On these islands you'll find all from beautiful, quiet beaches, loud and un-ending full moon parties, five star luxury hotels, sweet and simple cabanas, as well as every water adventure you can think of.

Bangkok Tour

Here is a two-week adventure-honeymoon itinerary from Thailand's capital, Bangkok City, to the main islands of the Gulf of Siam.

Day 1: Arrive at Bangkok international airport in the afternoon and take a cab to the very affordable Amari Boulevard Boutique Hotel in the centre of the industrial district (check with your trip agent, as this luxury boutique hotel often hosts container deals with Thai Airlines.) After unpacking and a quick lunch of Pad Thai and pineapple juice for 60 baht (about 2 Us dollars - makes up for the costly flight!), walk down the main strip of the area, packed with souvenir and former gift shops. Back at the hotel, book a very affordable guided tour of the city for the next day. Then walk out to the internet café/travel shops and book a bus trip, about an hour east, to the island of Koh Chang.

Day 2: After an early morning meal in the hotel restaurant, climb aboard the bus around 8:30 in the morning and perceive the vibrancy of the city: the tuk-tuks pulling habitancy along the street, flower markets with buckets full of fresh blooms and gorgeous Thai silk skirts. On your tour, you will get to see some of the city's favorite sights: the Grand Palace of Siam, Wat Pho Temple, and the paramount Reclining Buddha (which also makes an appearance in the film, The Beach).

Day 3: Rise early and catch the bus to Koh Chang Island. It is about an hour ride over the gorgeous countryside. From Trat, you'll take a glorious ferry ride over the water to the island. After disembarking the ferry, hitch a ride on a kindly truck to Magic Resort - a house run resort with incommunicable cabanas and honeymoon suites right on the beach. The on-site cafeteria serves delicious food - green curries, mango salads, spicy fish stir-fry.

Day 4: Meet your hosts: Nong, the village fisherman, Neng, the village Elvis (named for his great karaoke singing), and Henry - a part-time expat from Germany who lives at the resort 6 months out of the year and is the English translator for the family. They are a riot.

Day 5, 6: Still here. You won't want to leave. After singing karaoke, you have visited all the neighborhood thatched-roof pubs, ridden on elephants in the jungle and watched villagers tap the rubber trees. You've relaxed on the pristine white sands of the beach and read some novels from cover to cover, or you've meditated on the water, watching monks glide along the sand in their saffron robes. You're sitting beside your loved one, asking, "Is this a honeymoon? Or a dream?"

Day 7: Back to Bangkok. From there book a train to the island of Koh Samui. A longer ride, but you can catch a comfortable train or a local flight so that you can stretch your legs.

Day 8: You are in Koh Samui, staying at the luxurious Amari Palm Reef Resort. It is here, with the unrivaled view of the beaches, 2 swimming pools, and spa services that you will enjoy the romantic "honeymoon" stage of the journey (if you haven't already!) gorgeous palm-fringed, hilly landscapes, Cheweng Beach close by, and only minutes from Wat Prha Yai, home of the sitting Golden Buddha. Rent a scooter and ride around the island. The scenery is wild.

Day 9: Still at the pool. You just can't leave.

Day 10 and 11: Getting a dinky bit bored? Catch a ferry over to the next island about 30 minutes north to Koh Phangan - rumored to be the filming site for The Beach. Here you can snorkel the deep waters and lounge in hammocks while the day. Enjoy a beach Thai massage for 6 Us dollars. Then join the Half Moon or Full Moon party at night.

Day 12 and 13: an additional one short ferry ride north takes you to Koh Tao. This is often the favorite island for many adventure honeymooners for its unspoiled beauty. The terrain is hilly, a dinky more difficult for your scooter to navigate, but less touristy. It is a great scuba diving and snorkeling destination and also boasts some great locations for rock-climbers (all the gear for these adventure sports are effortlessly available from rentals on the island.)

Day 14: Back to the big city by train. After your final authentic Thai meal, catch a cab back to the airport. On the plane, devise a plan for when you'll next return for a longer stay.

Dating Asian Ladies - Thai Girls Part 1

For those of you who, like me, are attracted to Asian ladies, there are a few things that can help pave the rocky road to a happy and prosperous relationship. As with any relationship, there are ups and downs, good times and spicy times, but these fluctuations can appear to be much more dramatic and intense with Asian girls. It can sometimes feel as if we are on a roller coaster. The ride is exhilarating, passionate and rewarding and sometimes painfully sobering. One thing that can be said is it is not boring! In this first installment, I want to contemplate and point out some of my observations and experiences with the lovely ladies of Thailand and hopefully help others to navigate this exotic and treacherous path.

Ahh, the thrill and excitement of being in Thailand, the weather is hot, the food is hot, and oh my, the ladies. It has been said that Thai women are the most beautiful ladies in the world. This of procedure is subjective and that brings me to my first and maybe most prominent point about dating Thai ladies or any lady for that matter. It is all subjective, personal, and unique. There can be no absolute 'understanding' of Thai ladies. They are all individual, unique and permanently changing. We can discuss some general knowledge about the environment, culture, and common results of how these manifest in the ladies, but we must never forget for one instant that every lady is different. This cannot be emphasized enough. The moment we start generalizing and placing any someone into a box of our own conceptions is the starting of the end. We will never be dealing directly with the other someone but rather dealing only with our own little preconceptions. While many Thai ladies have some things in common, I have found them to be quite unique individuals and I need to practically throw away everything I opinion I had learned before when meeting a new girl. So please keep this in mind and it will help with all of your relationships.

Phuket

The family. The first thing to understand about Thai girls is the fierce loyalty and assistance they give to their family. Thai girls, especially the eldest sister are bound to take care of their parents and family in any way they can. As a potential partner we must understand this deep bond and commitment. We will all the time be second, and the family will be first. If we can understand and accept this, it will go a long way towards a prosperous relationship. To underline this loyalty and desire to repay their parents and take care of the family I like to quote a statement made by a friend of mine who works in the nightlife industry. To put it into context, I was having a conversation and trying to convince her that she should take a job for less money working at a factory and stop working in the bars. Her reply, without a moment of hesitation was 'My body is not for me, my body is not for a man, my body is for my mother. I must do what I can to take care of my mother. This body is not mine, this body is my mothers.' When I heard this I was floored. I was new to Thailand and Asia and it left me speechless. For all the crazy media hype about girls forced into prostitution and human smuggling, my direct touch from knowing many Thai people is that the mothers are often the biggest pimps, sending their girls to Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya or other destinations to make money. These girls often live quite cheaply, saving every Baht so they can send it home to their mothers. Don't take my word for it, come here and interview a few ladies yourself. Anyway, getting back to the topic at hand, this is obviously an ultimate example but it illuminates the depth of respect and loyalty that Thai girls have for their family, especially their parents. We can only hope to be second best. We will never be a girls number one concern. If it comes down to a decision either for you or for her family, you will lose every time! comprehension this from the beginning, we can then accept it and make the best of it. This being said, the best way of dealing with this, once you are sure you want to make a commitment to a girl, is to embrace her family 100%. This is a whole other ballgame and beyond the scope of this article, but it can be an adventure to say the least.

The second point that I feel is valuable to understand is money. Asia is not the west. We often forget this and try to apply western ideals and customs in dealing with Asian people. Now I am not talking about prostitutes, massage girls or bar girls here when I say that money is very prominent to Asian ladies. The so called 'good girls' are also after money. Now now, don't get excited. Remember we cannot apply our little western preconceptions to life in Asia. The parents will want their girl to marry a man that has adequate money, A man that can take care of her and the family. This is displayed in the old Thai tradition of 'Sin sot' or what we would call a dowry. It is often used as a display of the man's capability to furnish and show his wealth, or readiness to marry. I know of many cases where the sin sot was instantly returned to the man, or put into a joint catalogue owned by the incorporate or where the Thai family in case, granted either land or a house or both. Now before we get all pious, and look down upon Asians for being so materialistic and only wanting us for our money, we need to take a second and think about the average British or American girl. They also want to marry a rich man, but the way of dealing with this is not as blatant, and in my opinion not as 'honest'. Thai girls can be very practical. If we do not put our cultural blinders aside, we can be beyond doubt put off and angered by the 'honesty' displayed in this regard. In Asia, there is no wall dividing sex, dating, marriage and $$-money. Girls are raised in this culture to look at these things together, as one, without the need to cut off them out like we do in the west. An spicy girl will likely find a rich husband. Sexual market value and attractiveness are seen in terms of money. In Asia, this is not seen as a bad thing, or with any judgment. We cannot judge Asian people for mixing love and money so loosely if we are to find happiness here. I prefer to think of it as a more honest and open approach. So don't be surprised if your favorite 'teerak' decides to leave you because you don't have adequate money. It is not necessarily that she doesn't love you, just that love and money are not considerable so clearly here like they are in the west. The second part of this is to understand that Thai people view westerners as being rich. We will get charged more money for the same services and goods, because the common perception is that we have more money than the Thai people. So even if you are like me, and don't have much money, you will be perceived as rich, and unbelievable to pay and help out, and it is likely, as said before, that a girl might leave you if you don't soon show some capability to generate affluence. I know of situations where the girl was even in love with a guy, but here parents would not allow her to marry him because he did not have adequate money or a good job. Back to rule number one; she will of procedure listen to and succeed her parents first, and 'dump the chump' so to speak in a 'Bangkok second'! It can be a harsh reality here. In this culture you cannot be expecting much success in looking a good wife if you have little sexual market value (money). That is the cold hard reality. Now we all know of many worthless Thai guys that are 100% supported by the hard working and loyal wife. They spend the days drinking and gambling and whoring, not working, while the wife or girlfriend works to give him money, Strange but quite true. This will not happen with western men. We are farang-foreigners, and as farang are perceived to be rich, a Thai girl would lose face by having a farang boyfriend or husband that was down on his luck so to speak. Farang are often a status seal for Thai girls and they are proud to take you back to the settlement and show you off. Show off the Atm fish they have landed and how they now live the good life. If you cannot play this role and need to pinch every Baht, then your prospects will be little and short term. In Thailand, it is unbelievable that the man is ready (has $$) to have a girlfriend or wife or he shouldn't be trying to date. As I said before, every girl is unique and different. I have had some success with Thai girls while living here while I was dirt poor. They will sometimes be happy to go eat 'street noodles' (15-25 Baht) with you every day, but this is the exception, not the rule and I am sure the parents would not approve and would want their daughter to be dating a man with more money. It is the same situation as in the west or the world for that matter, just a more honest and 'in your face' way of dealing with it.

These two points are the biggies, the short 'must know' list for dating a Thai girl. There are countless other cultural and perceptual differences that can be spicy in day to day life with your teerak (darling), but in my opinion they are less prominent and commonly not 'show stoppers'. In fact, many of these differences you will find to be quite nice. Thai ladies can often be the most attentive and caring mates you will ever meet. In this country, Thai men live like Kings in their house. Thai girls are taught to take care of a man, and groomed from an early age on how to cook, and clean, and fold shirts, and beyond doubt take care and keep the husband happy. A few examples I can think of from my previous girlfriends are things like nail clipping or zit popping on your back, or massages. I can't imagine how impossible it would be to get the common American girl to cut your finger and toenails for you, much less pop the zits on your back! I did not know what to say when a previous Thai girlfriend started doing these things for me. How many western ladies in this generation beyond doubt cook and clean and take of their man? No, they want a maid, or you should cook for them, or take them out to dinner. Not in Thailand, many ladies I have dated were very anxious to show me that they can cook, and when they visit your apartment they will simply start to clean it up for you and fold your clothes. I remember a few years ago, walking into the bathroom one morning feeling all groggy from sleep. I walked up to the bathroom sink and started to reach for my toothbrush and noticed it already had toothpaste on it! My teerak had ready my toothbrush for me so when I woke up it was waiting for me to use. Try to get the common bitchy feminist western girl to do that one. I dare ya! I will stand back a safe length and watch! No, Thai girls are very smart, they know they will get what they want by being nice, feminine, and taking care of their mans needs.

So I wholeheartedly encourage you to take the plunge and touch what it is like dating a good Thai girl. I would strongly propose not trying to make a common bargirl into a loyal wife when there are so many nice girls that are dying to meet a good farang man. It is simply not worth the hassle and heartaches, why add more problems to what can already be a spicy situation. So, keep your preconceptions, western ideals, and judgments in check, take a dose of patience, and keep an open mind and I am sure you will not regret it. The ride may be a little bumpy here and there, but it is worth the price of admission.
